Equality and Inclusion Statement
Equality and inclusion statement
“A healthy social life is found when in the mirror of each human soul, the whole community finds its reflection, and when in the whole community, the virtue of each one is living.”
-Rudolf Steiner
At Nant-y-Cwm we are committed to being a welcoming, respectful and inclusive community for all children, families, staff and visitors. In line with the principles of Waldorf education, we value the dignity and unique identity of every human being and strive to create an environment in which everyone feels safe, respected and able to flourish.
We are inspired by the educational insights that have guided Waldorf schools for over 100 years and this leads us to place the healthy development of the whole child at the centre of our work. At the same time, we acknowledge that some of Rudolf Steiner’s historical writings contain racist, sexist and discriminatory views. We explicitly reject such views and they have no place in our school, our teaching, or our understanding of the human being. Steiner’s central ethical commitment was to the dignity, freedom, and spiritual individuality of every human being, a principle that underpins Steiner education and stands in opposition to discrimination or prejudice.
We recognise, respect and celebrate diversity in all its forms, including religion and belief, culture, ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, disability, neurodiversity, family background and socio-economic circumstances. Through our curriculum, we seek to reflect the richness of the human experience, offering children age-appropriate encounters with a wide range of cultures, traditions, stories and perspectives. We seek to be guided by a sense of justice, human rights, and equality and aim to instill values of open-mindedness and tolerance in our students and community.
Discrimination, harassment or exclusion in any form are not acceptable within our school community and we seek to respond in ways that are appropriate to a child’s age and stage of development. We recognise and acknowledge that bias can exist in both conscious and unconscious forms. We actively work to challenge inequality and prejudice through our work with the children, our professional development, parent-teacher relationships, policies and procedures. We strive to make our curriculum inclusive, balanced and representative of the world in which we live.
We understand inclusion as a continual and evolving process. We are committed to listening, learning and reviewing our practice in response to the needs of our community and to wider social understanding. Through conscious effort, collaboration and care, we seek to ensure that our school is a place where fairness, respect and belonging are actively lived values.
