At the end of the school year, the pupils bind their workbooks into one final book to take home and show their families. The children choose a peice of art they are most proud of, or maybe a topic which was important to them, and use the work for the front of the cover. These creative, curriculum-rich books become the culmination of all that students have learned, in depth, for the year. Students learn the Main Lesson topics, such as History, Science, and Mathematics, in blocks averaging 4 to 6 weeks, and students create a new Main Lesson book for each block. '' I get the children to create the tools that they use, such as the shave horses which we sit at to shave the wood. We had to make all of those for the outdoor classroom, before anything else. We made those over weeks with the older classes, and it was great. We also made tent pegs and mallets which they need for projects, they get lots of use. It's about trying to create tangible, purposeful objects from beginning to end. I want to get the children really in touch with the materials they are using. Class 6 and 7 have been learning about the body and the circulatory system, taking each other's heart rates and listening with stethoscopes. Turning twelve marks the beginning of what Steiner called ‘Earth maturity.’ It ushers in a fascination with how things work, why things happen, and the laws that govern the world. Their thinking remains practical, and thus observable scientific experiments and practical experiences of the world and their own abilities are of central importance. During this block, the children practiced archery each morning. They were able to see that with mindful breathing and quiet, focused attention, their aim and execution improved. This demonstrated that complete body engagement in every action—a focused mind with breathing and body working together—can help them achieve desired outcomes.
